How to work ON your business from the school pick-up line

OMG I have a Kindergartener and officially get to experience back-to-school season. Ada started a couple of weeks ago and even though we're still in the middle of the hottest Summer ever here in Phoenix and seeing the Fall decorations on store shelves feels way too soon, there's something about starting a fresh school year that sparked a bit inspiration for my own new beginning as well and has got me thinking about what I want the rest of 2023 to be, in business and in mom life.

I've joked that with each baby, I've also birthed a new business, but it really is true. I've been a mom and a business owner for just over 5 years, with my girls right by my side at home trying to make the 'blend' of work and life work for us, often feeling caught up in the monotony of day-to-day life and the pressure to get client tasks done during naps & screen time. Now, with one in daycare and the other in Kinder, I have dedicated time to work intentionally on my business and craft something that is cracking open a new source of joy for me.

Here's what I know:
  • Promoting our own work is hard because we rarely make ourselves a priority (between kids and clients, who has the time?!).

  • So much of the business advice I see falls into one of two categories: 1) all mindset, no action or 2) too much action all at once so we get overwhelmed and do nothing.

  • Creating messaging that feels true is a process that requires a bit of mental space & a ton of vulnerability.

  • Blocking off huge chunks of my week to work on my business never feels feasible.

You can do this in under 10 minutes:

Here's my secret to cramming in a few business-related tasks during my day that help me make progress without feeling like I'm dropping the ball somewhere else:

I use my notes app to keep a running list of things I want to fix on my website, ideas for new ways to talk about my services, common problems that my clients come to me for help with, and topics I want to write about. A few minutes before leaving for school pick-up, an appointment, or the grocery store, I look through my list, pick one that feels right, and think about it as I drive. Here's the key: Before getting out of the car, I use voice-to-text to record my thoughts—that's it, that's my secret!

These either stay in my notes app or I email them to myself so that they show up in my inbox where I can take action on whatever I just wrote. Is it completely polished and ready to share? Absolutely not, but it's a heck of a lot more progress than I started with and I didn't have to stare at a blank screen or feel like I was "wasting" any work or family time.

It's not fancy, but it's also not hard. I'll share a list of questions later, but for now, I'm sure you have a ton of your own to tackle!
